Setting: Plant Tissue Culture (PTC) Laboratory
Location: Dar es salaam, Tanzania
Hours: Monday – Saturday/ 8am – 5.30pm (occasional late hours when schedule warrants; be “on-call” to respond to system alarms, nights and Sundays when needed)
Job summary:
The Plant Tissue Culture Laboratory Supervisor will have complete responsibility of the
Tissue Culture Laboratory and shared responsibility of production greenhouse activities.
Primary activity will be to produce the required numbers of plantlets, harden and plant them in the nursery/greenhouses with the correct varieties at specified times; High throughput axenic plant multiplication of banana, cassava, potato and other crops;
Maintenance of variety and line identity and purity; Scheduling staff and ordering supplies;
Maintain complete records of accessions, certification testing, and inventories; Maintain a clone bank of >100 lines; Continuous improvement and innovation of tissue culture techniques for banana, cassava, potato, sweet potato, coffee, vanilla and potential new crops; Stay current on new developments in plant tissue culture; Develop and validate optimal techniques, which may include differences among varieties; Maintain written
Standard Operating Procedures for all activities; Train staff in plant tissue culture
techniques (within media prep, cutting room, growth rooms and hardening facilities) and
evaluate performance of self and others; Investigate new crop opportunities for both
tissue culture and greenhouse production; Observe greenhouse crops and recommend
inputs; Supervise greenhouse staff.

Education/Experience Requirements:
- BSc/MSc/PhD in Microbiology/Chemistry/Biochemistry/Plant Tissue Culture or any related degrees.
- Relevant laboratory experience of more than seven years.
- Fluently speak, read and write both in English and Kiswahili.
- MS Office- Word, Excel, Powerpoint
